Steps to Obtain an Ijazah in the Qur’an

1 – Finding a Qualified Sheikh .

  • You must study with a Sheikh who already holds an Ijazah with a connected chain (Sanad) back to the Prophet ﷺ.

2 – Recitation in Front of the Sheikh

  • You begin by reciting a portion of the Qur’an to the Sheikh.
  • The Sheikh corrects your mistakes, especially in Tajweed rules and pronunciation.

3 – Mastery and Repetition

  • You recite the entire Qur’an to the Sheikh, from beginning to end (this is called “ʿArḍ”).
  • The recitation must be almost error-free.

4 – Final Examination

  • After completing the full recitation, the Sheikh tests you—either in memorization (for Hifz Ijazah) or recitation (for Tajweed Ijazah).

5 – Granting the Ijazah

  • If you pass, the Sheikh writes you an Ijazah certificate, which includes your name and the chain of transmission (Sanad) linking you back to the Prophet ﷺ.

Once you obtain an Ijazah, you are officially authorized to teach the Qur’an and even grant Ijazah to others, just like your teacher did for you.
